Dawson Women’s Shelter is currently hiring for an On-Call Shelter Attendant
Rate of pay:
$22.00 per hour for daytime, evening & weekend shifts
Overnight shifts (sleep shifts) are paid an honorarium rate of $150
Qualifications:
Keen interest to work with and support women and children in crisis
Strong understanding of the dynamics of gendered violence and abuse as well as structural and systemic violence
Ability to listen non-judgmentally & to show empathy
Self-motivated; ability to work independently and as part of our team
Capacity to engage in open communication with supervisors and team members
Ability to problem solve and resolve conflict appropriately
Understanding of impacts of ongoing colonization on Indigenous Peoples, the history of residential schools in Canada, and intergenerational trauma
Intersectional feminist analysis and ability to work from within an antiracism/anti-oppression framework, knowledge of harm reduction approach and practices
Front line support work or volunteer experience is required
Diploma/degree in Women’s and Gender Studies (or equivalent volunteering or study) or related field an asset but not required
Required: RCMP clearance check, willingness to become First Aid CPR certified
Duties:
Work with women and children who have experienced violence and homelessness; provide support in DWS’ residential and drop-in programs as well as on our 24-hour support line
Ensure safety of the shelter and service users at all times
Follow protocols and procedures, adhere to strict confidentiality policy
Accurate record keeping according to guidelines
Household chores and cleaning, general office work as assigned
Helping with programming and workshops as needed
Duties as assigned by Executive Director including attending staff training and monthly team meetings
Be able to work evening, weekend and overnight shifts as part of shelter attendant role
